Surrogacy for me just happened. The opportunity arose and I never looked back. I had tossed around the idea for one day becoming a surrogate but never thought I would find the right time or the right support from my family.
On December 14, 2011, I received a phone call that put everything in a rapid motion. My cousin was 16 weeks pregnant with a child she had been wishing for. She had a complete bicorniate uterus and it had ruptured while she was speaking to a professor after an exam. At first they just thought she was sick until she drastically got worse. They rushed her to the emergency room a block away. It was there that the OB tried three times to save her uterus until she had lost too much blood. They finally had to perform the hysterectomy and with that, her chances of ever carrying a child.
Once I was home my husband knew what would happen. I looked at him and stated very blunting, “I want to be her surrogate. She deserves to have a child.”
On Christmas Eve we told her the news together with my family. We offered to be an uncompensated surrogate and help her achieve her goals of having that precious baby in her arms. Sixteen months later she received that healthy baby boy she had dreamed of. He was delivered by the same OB that helped save her life and helped the journey go full circle.
Surrogacy was always something I had wished to do but I feared how much support I would have from my family. I called my mother the night everything happened and told her what I wanted to do. She supported me through it all. She supports me now with hopes of a second journey. It was something I thought no one would understand but they did.
I became a surrogate out of opportunity but the surrogacy world did not just fade once birth was over. The love of surrogacy only grew as I began to be introduced to the community. I met Jon, Christy and the Surrogacy Together team after my Surrogate journey was completed.
It was then that I realized my surrogacy journey had only begun.
